Guide to the Card
Catalogs
The Historical Society
of
Pennsylvania’s nine card catalogs —commonly referred to as
public catalogs or PCs —each serve a
different research function. The general contents of each catalog are
described
below. If you have any questions, or are unsure whether a call number
indicates
a restricted or open stack item, please see the Reference Staff for
assistance.
Call slips, scrap paper and pencils are located on the top of each
catalog for
your use.
PC-1
MANUSCRIPT Catalog. This catalog is
mainly a name index which documents primary source material including
letters,
diaries, journals, account books, ledgers, minutes, etc. In some cases,
finding
aids are available for manuscript collections —
please ask at the Reference Desk.
PC-2 Library Company of Philadelphia
MANUSCRIPT

index to manuscript collections of the
Library Company of Philadelphia (LCP).
LCP manuscripts are reviewed in the Historical Society of Pennsylvania
Reading
Room.
PC-3
BROADSIDE Catalog. This catalog
contains entries for the Society’s broadside collections, arranged by
author
(when known), title, and subject. Note:
WWI and WWII posters are indicated by blue cards.
PC-4

contains entries for the Society’s graphics collections, subdivided
into four
categories (please ask the Reference Desk for finding aids).

code letters found on these cards refer
to source titles, which are listed in the first drawer of this catalog.
